  1. Stock Up
The first thing to do is stock up on non-perishable food for at least three days and one gallon of water per person per day.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you should also prepare clean water containers, any necessary prescription medications, a first aid kit, and more.

Here’s a recommended list:

It’s also recommended to wear sturdy shoes to avoid injuries from storm debris, stay away from downed power lines, and watch out for displaced wild animals.

You should have an emergency kit with: Extra supply of necessary medications, Extra oxygen if required, Band-aids, Mosquito repellent, Burn cream, Aspirin, Antiseptic alcohol, Hydrogen peroxide.

  1. Important Information

Power outages and dead cell phones are common during hurricanes. Be sure to create a physical list of emergency and important contacts.

Also, ensure you have a working battery-powered radio, plenty of extra batteries, and flashlights.

Create a list of your health-related information: medications with their dosages, your doctors’ contact info, and any medical devices you use.

Follow These CDC Recommendations:

Keep listening to the radio or watching TV for official updates

Stay inside your home—do not go outside until you hear or see an official message that the hurricane has passed

Stay away from windows, as broken glass can cause serious injuries

Remain in a room with no windows or take shelter in a closet. The best option is a bathtub, covering yourself with plywood

Always be prepared to leave if necessary

  1. Evacuation Planión
Make sure you have a clear evacuation plan and are familiar with it in case you need to leave your home due to the emergency.

Include the following in your plan:

Anota los números de teléfono de emergencia y mantenlos cerca de cada teléfono y guárdalos en tu celular
Compra un extintor de incendios y dile a tu familia dónde está y cómo usarlo
Averigua dónde está el refugio más cercano y cuáles son las diferentes rutas que puedes tomar para llegar a él en caso de que debas evacuar

  1. Prepara tu casa
Write down emergency numbers and keep them near every phone and saved in your cellphone
Buy a fire extinguisher and teach your family where it is and how to use it
Find out where the nearest shelter is and know multiple routes to get there in case you need to evacuate
  1. If You Must Evacuate
Never ignore an evacuation order. Even if you believe your home can withstand the storm or you want to protect your property—it’s not worth risking your life.

If you’re ordered to evacuate, follow these steps (CDC):

Take only the essentials: phone, medications, ID, and cash}
Make sure your car has an emergency kit
If time allows, turn off gas, electricity, and water, and unplug all electrical appliances
Drive only on routes recommended by emergency services

We continue to follow health guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please wear a face mask, use hand sanitizer, and maintain social distancing. Stay safe.
